1. Source code of the site.

   Currently there is a placeholder repository on the Open Food Facts Github for the server. It'd be nice if the actual code were there to aid in recovering from a disaster, such as the loss of the main site.

2. Salt vs Sodium

   In Spain, at least in some products, instead of the sodium quantity the salt quantity is displayed in the nutrition table. I have read that it could be made an automatic convertion (the salt contains 40% of sodium) from one to another and I think it would be interesting to include the option so that you could enter interchangeably one or other.

3. Calculating statistics: do I buy healthy food?

   Can we do such a system:

   I register on the Carrefour website giving my credit card number. When shopping at Carrefour I pay using that credit card. By logging into Carrefour's account, I can check the list of purchased products for each of my purchases.

   After log in to the Open Food Facts web page it downloads purchase history from my Carrefour account then it calculates total mass of saturated fats and sugars I bought in the last 12 months. On this basis Open Food Facts shows information whether I buy healthy food or not. In addition, I would like to know if I do not eat too much preservatives (Exxx) which are considered harmful.

   Can we do such a system:

4. Highlight Lists

   Several suggestions on this forum are asking for some target highlighting functionality: To highlight allergens, identify non-Vegan foods, so on...

   I would like to propose a generic solution to all of these: highlight lists. Users create/modify downloadable lists of ingredients to be highlighted. For example, a user could create a highlight list for "Gluten" which contains ingredients: "Wheat, Barley, Rye, Oats, ...". Then, another user can download the list and select to highlight all "Gluten" ingredients as green. Users individually select which highlight lists they want to show for their own screen only.

   Users can then select to highlight whatever they wish. They scan the item and immediately see colors representing whether or not the ingredients have any concerning ingredients. Vegans may choose to highlight all non-vegan ingredients as red. Those with allergies, such as myself, could select a different color for each allergen to know which allergens scanned items contain.

   In the future, other users can modify the highlight list for "Gluten" to add other ingredients (perhaps other languages) to highlight for. Some lists will be massive, even a minimal list of "Corn" allergens is almost 200 items long for english alone (http://www.cornallergens.com/list/corn-allergen-list.php).

5. Pistes d'amélioration pour les applications mobiles

   Je sais sait pas si ça correspond au but du logiciel développé ou si c'est facile à implémenter pour un dev (je le soupconne mais je ne peux être sûr). Je ne sais pas non plus si c'est une nouvelle idée, sans doute pas mais je tente quand même.

   En voyant la quantité de données renseignés sur les fiches produits et en attrapant une sauce soja coréennes avec en gros marqué "OGM FREE", je suis allé sur le site et quand j'ai de nouveau vu les pastilles de couleur, j'ai eu une idée.

   Avec les infos déjà dans la base de données et un temps de traitement qui ne serait pas trop long, l'utilisation grand public pourrait exploser.
   Pour l'instant on parle des notes nutritionelles, ce qui est déjà très bien. Mais le système est franco français (si je ne dis pas de bêtises), c'est calculé sur 100 (et si on mange beaucoup moins d'un produit par rapport à un autre?) et ça laisse de côté pas mal de sujets... qui sont déjà dans la base de données du site.

   En prenant en compte ces éléments, que penseriez-vous, à l'intérieur de l'appli mobile :

   • De pouvoir indiquer sur quel critères (à définir), on veut être alerté/on veut voir afficher sur les fiches produits.
     Les critères auxquel j'ai pensé et déjà relevés sur les fiches produits :

   • Produit OGM (Possible/Le produit indique que non/Label le certifiant) avec les mêmes couleurs verte orange rouge.

   • Gluten free ou pas

   • Aliment fabriqué dans le pays où l'achat s'effectue. On pense de plus à consommer local. C'est peut être plus écologique, patriotisme économique et moral, ça peut ouvrir les yeux sur un produit qu'il est ridicule d'acheter importer.
     C'est peut-être pas primordial pour tout le monde en France. Par exemple aux philippines, le nombre de produits importés est dingue et dans bien des cas on va avoir l'équivalent local. Pourquoi j'achèterais du thon en boite de l'amérique du sud quand je peux en avoir un local ?

   • Bio ou non (croisement des labels à mettre dans une nouvelle catégorie qui valident le bio ou pas. Pareil pour le gluten free ou autres par exemple).

   Il faudrait prévoir une pastille barré (ou autre) dans le cas où une information est peut être disponible pour le produit mais où l'information n'as pas été renseigné par la personne. (Par exemple par d'indication des ingrédients).

   Alors bien sûr il faudrait veiller à ne pas noyer les utilisateurs sous une tonne d'information. Mais pour un utilisateur, cela prendrait 5 minutes à configurer dans son application (quels éléments afficher par exemple).
   Et je pense m'être arrêté aux préoccupations majeures des gens à l'heure actuelle avec des données déjà disponible.

   Le grand plus de ces ajouts serait que les infos sont déjà en base de données et surtout que depuis n'importe quel pays c'est utilisable, peu importe la langue de l'utilisateur.

   À l'heure actuelle, l'utilisateur doit lire toute la fiche produit lorsqu'elle s'ouvre.
   On peut imaginer que ces quelques informations apparaîtrait automatiquement sous formes de pastilles comme l'aspect nutritionel.

   La deuxième idée serait de permettre définir des alertes sur les fiches produits.
   Par exemple si le produit n'est pas bio, en plus de la pastille, un message en rouge m'indique que ce produit ne corresponds pas à mes critères.

   En plus de cette fonctionnalité qui pourrait je pense être implémenté en quelques jours par un dév (j'ai bossé en informatique mais pas en dév, ça me semble être techniquement qu'une extraction dans la bdd et quelqu'un connaissant le dév aplicatif android/ios pour l'afficher proprement dans l'application), on pourrait imaginer une fonction pas trop compliqué à créer je pense qui rendrait d'un coup toutes ces données intéressantes pour des millions de gens.

   La plupart des gens sont intéréssés, mais n'ont pas le temps, sont feignants ou simplement oublient.

   Imaginons que l'application, plutôt que de scanner un produit puis un autre garde en mémoire les scans pour certains critères défini. A la fin des courses, je souhaite faire un état de mon alimentation.

   Par exemple pour quelqu'un pensant consommer beaucoup de produits transformés, voulant faire un état des produits consommés et produit hors du pays d'achat ou simplement certifié sans ogm.

   Je scan mes produits après mes courses pour découvrir que 3/4 de mes produits contiennent trop de sucre, que mon alimentation est tout sauf bio et que je n'encourage pas du tout la production locale. Tout ça en 5 minutes avec mon téléphone !
   Je pourrais ensuite dérouler la liste des produits ne contenant pas d'ogm par exemple.

   Cela pourrait entrainer énormément de prises de conscience et le gros du travail est fait. Les données et l'application existent !
   Et ça serait utilisable d'une manière internationale.

   Pour aller plus loin, on peut imaginer mettre en alerte la présence allergène de noix si on peut formater l'ajout de cette info sur les fiches mais aussi les autres allergènes. Bien sûr pour ça, ça ne remplacerait pas une vérification mais quel gain de temps pour quelqu'un scanant un produit et sachant en une seconde qu'il y a un produit auxquel il est allergique dedans. Si il n'y a pas d'alerte, il peut toujours vérifier bien sûr en lisant le paquet.

   On peut imaginer tout pleins d'utilisations sans ajouter de fonctions. Des touristes devant manger des trucs spécifiques pourrait l'utiliser par exemple sans barrières de langue.

   Bon concrètement, je ne propose pas de le faire, on peut dire que c'est facile de proposer.
   J'étais juste très intéressé par ce que les gens ici pourraient en penser, sur ma naiveté ou non quand à la réalisation et pourquoi pas un developpeur motivé pour mettre ça en place. La quantité de travail face à ce qu'on pourraît y gagner me semble tellement en faveur de ce qu'on y gagnerait.

   Ça ouvre le débat, peut-être qu'il a déjà eu lieu, peut-être que ce que je propose n'est pas intéressant mais j'aurais tenté.

   Pourquoi pas lancer un kickstarter ou autre si ça demande de l'argent...

6. Apply for a technology strategy board funding

   I think there is a possibility to get funding from the technology startegy board, now called innovate uk.
   Innovate UK is an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Business, Innovation & Skills: "[They] fund, support and connect innovative businesses to accelerate sustainable economic growth."

   I think the goal of the OpenFoodFacts apply to at least a program, namely:
   "Agri-food supply chain"

   The scope is quite vast, but must encompasse at least one of the 3 proposed high-level challenges.
   OpenFoodFacts respond to one of them "innovating to benefit consumer health, wellbeing and choice"

   Further down in the scope, we can find 11 lower level challenges.
   There is 3 challenges that I think align with the goal and mission of the openfoodfacts:
   * food safety, authenticity and traceability: technologies or approaches to maintain product safety and quality, assure provenance or protect against food fraud
   * technologies, approaches or services which support the sustained modification of consumer or employee behaviours: such as improving nutrition and/or health, healthier food choices, personalisation of diet, productivity and reduction of waste
   * use of data: such as improved methods for the application of ‘omics' information; generation and interpretation of large data sets relevant to the agri-food supply chain; tools or products that take account of impacts on the environment and ecosystem services; and improving the traceability of raw materials and supply

   This is basically for companies.
   Looking at how one can setup a company in the Uk, I think the current "loi 1901" and a company could both exist without too much paperwork.
   While I'm sure that your goal is not to make profit, it could be helpful to have fund to develop the technical side of the concept.

7. I would like a new data field "problematic"

   A free "problematic" field where one could enter info about socially problematic behaviour of the producer (child exploitation, racist, environment pollution, etc.). Of course not without links to corresponding press reports as a proof. This is (at least for me) an important fact for a buy/no-buy-decision.
   I am pretty sure that this suggestion will trigger some discussion ...

8. Free note or observations regarding each specific packaging information

   Packaging is the main source of pollution around the world.

   Understanding their codes, identifying their fabrication processes can increase efficiently the way we can improve their impact not according to the producers who consider which information they can provide, and the ones they can hide. they look for maintaining their production high versus low, but from consumers point of view knowing is the main objective.

   the report can be done in several steps.
   why? the process can be interrupted by a call, sms, email, or chat.
   it is better to save at least in 3 steps due to the amount of information required. it's better to save several steps than at once when you might loose or forget the process by procrastination.

    Hi,
    The removal is clearly lacking, we need to do that.
    You can upload photos of the back of the package, and they can currently be displayed in the ingredients or nutrition facts section. It could be useful to be able to have more products photos (e.g. back or zoomed) though, thanks for the suggestion!

11. Which categories should be used and how is the categories hierarchy created? (question)

    The categories. At first, I added the products in a very restrictive kind of categories. But after adding several dozens of products, I realize that it doesn't make sense have a lot of categories with 1, 2 or 3 products in them (for now), so I am grouping the products in a few general categories (I am still grouping them). I think that the best is follow the "wikipedia way": Having general categories and when exist enough products (15-20??) that can be grouped together, create a subcategory for them. I saw in the french version this hierarchical struture category-subcategory. How can be done? Or you have to do it manually? In the other hand, it seems that people is adding categories without an unified criteria and looks like a little chaotic. Are you or other people working to unify the categories, so, when we have more products in the sp version, we can copy the scheme? (question from Javichu)

12. Create food inventory functionality for families using the openfoodfacts database

    It would add so much more vallue to the existing app to be able to add the scanned products to your food inventory. How many items you have currently in stock, which items are out and need to be purchased, create a shopping list, add expiry dates of food to avoid food waste ...

13. Add basic ingredients

    Currently when you search for something like 'tomato', you don't get a result for a regular raw tomato. Instead you get a bunch of tomato based products. Please add basics to the database. Or make them easier to find if they are in fact there.

15. Support for store/warehouse barcodes (UPC-A prefix 2)

    There is a special kind of barcodes for variable-weight items. They use the prefix '2'

    Hi Itmar,
    We already do support barcodes starting with 2. It’s not very useful for the stores that use them to encode the weight, price etc. though, as they are different for every products.
    But some stores are using them for normal products too, when they are the only stores to sell the products.
    Is more support needed?

16. decode barcode by country, producer and article number

    every barcode is build by rules of EAN/GS1/GTIN . It starts with country code, vendor/producer and his article numbers. Would it be a good idea to connect each product to a EAN database ? Then at first look to the barcode number every user could learn about the composition about food barcode numbers just at first look.

19. Add tutorial

    In the app, but could be on the site too, we should have a tutorial at first launch (with tick box "don't display next time") that will say:
    login to off
    while on the move:
    1/ scan bar code
    2/ take at least 3 pictures:
    a. front picture of the product
    b. picture of nutrition facts
    c. picture of ingrediants
    enter prdouct name.

    when back home you can login on the web off and go to the "product you added or contributed" page and confortably type all the information from your computer or another contributor may type it for you as they'll have all the informatin available in the pictures.

20. Display the owner of the brand next to the brand name

    Add a new field close to the brand name to inform of the owner of the brand. Many times the brand and company's name doesn't match or a company can have plenty of registered trade marks, like Kraft, Pepsico or Lidl supermarkets. (suggestion by Javichu)

    That’s a good idea. I started a file some time ago to list the hierarchy of brands and companies:

    I’m guessing the file can be international. We may get a few conflicts here and there (different brands with the same name) but hopefully we’ll find a way to solve them.
