  1. Add an API?

This could be very useful for integration into other applications. Any plans for adding an API? If properly executed, this could become a very valuable backend, which could be monetized.

Also, an API could help with data collection too.

  2. Add a price field in local currency

Add a price field in local currency which autoconverts when looking at the page with different locale preferences.
This way we can also lower the prices by spying on the different stores and compare them online.

  3. F-Droid

Is the App on F-Droid (https://f-droid.org)? If not, I think this would help to get more users to contribute to the database as this is an app market, following the same ideals as you.

  4. Include GMO-Free attribute

Many products are differentiating themselves as GMO free. It is a controversial issue, but those products that are labeled GMO free should have a field in the database to reflect that. Probably need a 3-option value: Non-GMO, GMO, Unknown, which defaults to unknown.

  5. Is it possible to select only products that are vegan? I would like a tick box for vegetarian or vegan or glutenfree or any other diets.

Make it easier for people with allegies or food preferences (vegan or so) to find products that are OK for them in a simple way

  6. Related products and non-unique barcodes

These are several points to note and suggestions to handle them:

    1) Nutrition facts and Barcodes aren't unique so there's a need to not make a barcode as an unique identificator of the product. Or, provide support for multiple products with same barcode.

    2) Barcodes vary from one country to another. Even if it's the same product, barcodes may vary (Because the barcode format, etc). My suggestion is trying to add links to the same product even if they are in different countries.

    3) Enhance search with filters. Many people wants to look for products that keep them healthier. So,…

  8. Extend the recognition of packers codes to more countries

The packer code: What we have right now only make sense for french products... I guess that exist some propousal at the European Union level to unify this, but right now, every country follows its own approach. For example, in Spain, you can know the real manufacturer (including the real site where the product is made if the manufacturer have several sites) looking the number "RGSEAA" (Registro General Sanitario de Empresas Alimentarias y Alimentos) (also known before as the RGSA number or something like that) in the product and then searching in the database accasible from: http://rgsa-web-aesan.msssi.es/rgsa/formulario_principal_js.jsp . This database…

  10. Personal Black- and whitelist for ingredients

In addition to the allergy warning it would be great to would great to extend the feature to incompatibilities (phosphates / e450 - e452 for example).
Or to go further and add a great feature: deposit your own black and whitelist for ingredients so that the app helps you which product fits to your needs.
In addition, there could be a smart statistic info which could show, which manufacturer tends to use the entries on the blacklist or whitelist in his products.

  11. Handle products with multiple origins for ingredients and places of transformation

The origin: I would add some button with an "extended info" label on it to show fields to enter the origin of the ingredients and the manufacturer and/or packer separately. Nowdays, we have many products with a spanish (in my case) brand and company, but with the main product(s) coming from China, Perú, Brasil... the results of the Globalization. So, many people that look for consuming more local products and reduce the ecological footprint would like to know ingredient's origin and manufacturer/packer origin. Also, in most Fair Trade products, you have a very detailled info about the origin of the…

This is a very interesting suggestion. One one hand I’m trying to keep the product form as simple as possible, so that products can be added as quickly and effortlessly as possible. And on the other hand, more information is better.
Maybe we could try to offer an alternate representation of the list of ingredients, in a table as you suggest. The table view would be constructed from the plain text data, and contributors could add extra information like origin, whether the ingredient is organic, from fair trade etc. or not.
It’s not as easy as it sounds though, as sometimes the ingredients list contain sub-ingredients etc. so the table might not always work.

  12. allow different products with the same barcode

Barcode 22147356 is used for two similar but different products. One is a nut mix with chocolate, one is a nut mix with cranberries. Ingredients and Nutrition facts are not the same for both products. Just the price is the same. This would only need to apply to EAN barcodes starting with 2, as the 2xx prefix is for retailer internal use.

  15. Set up a regular forum for discussing issues, rules etc.

Have you thought about the possibility to set up a regular forum, so people can interact more directly about different issues? Also, it can be useful to discuss some rules that we can follow. For example, I am thinking to come up with some naming convention for standarize the name of the products. For example the same product can appear as cous-cous, cus-cus, cuscús, ..., tahine, tahin, tajín, ... The searching engine won't return you the correct items if every product is named with a different spelling. (suggestion from Javichu)

  17. add a food diary app

Here's my use-case: I want to keep a food diary.

http://fddb.info/ has good usability (I'm from Germany),
    BUT:
    - their site has no export -- lame
    - they keep data only for 2 years if you pay -- suuure
    - you cannot add food facts -- lame

I believe if there was a food diary app based on openfoodfacts, then people would have an incentive to contribute even more.

Imagine this: It is evening. You type the things you ate into the openfoodfacts-diary, but suddenly you cannot find X. Fortunately openfoodfacts is open, so you fetch X's packaging, look at…

  18. Take photo of the ingredient list too.

This could be run through OCR on the server, so it would add a list of ingredients to each product. Really convenient for people with allergies.

  19. Better handling of allergens

Your current method of supporting allergens is to highlight them in the ingredient list. This works for some allergens, but not others.

For example, Gluten is contained in barley malt, a common ingredient in cereals (like rice krispies). There's no current way to highlight that this ingredient contains gluten. (Note: I consider this separate from may contain traces of gluten... its not a trace, its an actual listed ingredient, it just so happens to not be called 'gluten' in the ingredient list).

This site would be extremely helpful for those with allergies, if you were somehow able to 'check' down…

How if we can create a subsection where we can introduce the allergens that the food possibly contais? It could be really useful for celiac people or lactose intolerant (among others).
